Filing Re-Opens for Christian County Recorder of Deeds

In a story confirmed first by the Christian County Sun via Twitter (@ChristianCoSun), filing for the position of county Recorder of Deeds will re-open tomorrow at 8:00am & will remain open until Wed. April 7 at 5:00pm.

Christian County Clerk Kay Brown issued the following statement:

Due to the withdrawal today of Candidacy for the Christian County Recorder of Deeds position by incumbent Roy Meadows, filing for Candidacy for the Recorder of Deeds Office ONLY will reopen on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at 8:00 a.m. in the County Clerk’s Office located on the second floor of the Historic Christian County Courthouse on the square in Ozark, Missouri. Filing for Candidacy will be open until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7th, 2010. This procedure is required by Missouri State Statutes 115.359 and 115.361.

This morning, incumbent Recorder Roy Meadows submitted a withdrawal from the race, after Linda Essick, who currently works in the county recorder’s office signed on to the ballot at the last few minutes before the filing deadline last night.

Several people voiced frustration & disgust at what appeared to be a political maneuver to allow Essick to run for the Republican nomination unopposed. However, state law requires that filing be re-opened for five business days when an incumbent withdraws before ballots have been printed.

Meadows denies any political motive other than having no desire to run a campaign.

Brown expects several candidates to add their names to the ballot in the coming week.

The Sun will continue to bring you updates via Twitter, Facebook, and our website as details emerge.
